Mentoring: The Driver’s Seat Approach for Mentees

Your growth is most powerful when you are in control. Mentoring: The Driver’s Seat Approach is designed for mentees who want to take ownership of their professional development and make the most of a mentoring relationship.

In this course, participants will learn how to establish clear expectations with their mentor, including goals, boundaries, communication preferences, and the overall structure of the relationship. Emphasis is placed on identifying meaningful short- and long-term goals using the SMART framework and translating those goals into a personal development plan with clear timelines and milestones.

Mentees will also learn how to recognize common gaps that may slow progress—such as limited resources, unclear vision, or blind spots—and how to address them through thoughtful self-reflection and purposeful conversation. The course builds skills in asking better questions, engaging in facilitated dialogue, and using mentoring conversations as a tool for clarity and momentum.

Rather than focusing solely on outcomes, this training encourages mentees to evaluate progress by reflecting on the effectiveness of the mentoring process itself, fostering continuous learning and accountability. By the end of the course, participants will feel confident taking the lead in their mentoring relationships, using their mentor as a strategic partner while remaining firmly in the driver’s seat of their own development.
